Who are we?

The Hebrew Catholic Association is an association of Catholics of Jewish and non-Jewish descent. The Association was founded in 1979 by Father Elias Friedman, a Hebrew Catholic and Carmelite monk who lived at the Stella Maris Monastery on Mount Carmel until his repose in 1999, and by Andrew Scholl, a Holocaust survivor. The Hebrew Catholic Association was established in the United States and shortly thereafter the printing arm of the Association, Miriam Press, was founded. In 1987, the Association published Father Elias' book, "Jewish Identity." The book was given the Imprimatur by the Archbishop of New York. "Jewish Identity" forms the theological and historical background for the Hebrew Catholic Association.

The purpose of the AJC is to preserve the identity, presence, and heritage of the Jewish people in the church. By bringing together Jews who have chosen to come under the wing of the church, our hope is that we can ignite in one another our unique calling and help one another live it out—to bear witness to Jesus, the Messiah of Israel, and His church. We also want to help the church prepare for the day when God will gather all nations and hasten the day when all Israel will call out, “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.”
